Mick Mackey statue unveiled

A fitting tribute to a hurling legend
Mick Mackey has been immortalised in bronze in his native village of Castleconnell.
A life-size statue of the legendary Ahane and Limerick hurler was unveiled at a ceremony by GAA president Liam O'Neill yesterday. Mackey already has the stand at the Gaelic Grounds named after him, while there were recent unsuccessful attempts to have the Munster senior hurling championship cup named after him.
Mackey, who died in 1982, is regarded as one of the greatest hurlers of all time, winning three All-Ireland, five Munster and five National League medals during his illustrious inter-county career which spanned from 1930 to '47.
