The death of former GAA president and proud south Kilkenny man Paddy Buggy has taken place.

Aged 84, the Slieverue clubman held the top position in the Association between 1982 and '84. He had previously served as chairman of the Kilkenny county board and the Leinster Council.

Whilst best known as an administrator, Buggy was also a talented hurler who won five Leinster SHC medals and one All-Ireland medal with Kilkenny. He played for the Cats from 1949 to '60, winning his All-Ireland in '57 when Kilkenny came from behind to beat neighbours Waterford in the final.

With Slieverue, Paddy won a county SHC medal in 1954. In addition, he managed Leinster to five consecutive Railway Cup victories between 1971 and '75.

Reposing at Powers Funeral Home, Ferrybank tomorrow, Friday, from 2pm with Removal at 7pm to the Sacred Heart Church Ferrybank. Requiem Mass on Saturday at 2pm followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Commenting on the passing of Paddy Buggy, current GAA President Liam O'Neill said: "I had the privilege of knowing Paddy personally. He was a kind, gentle man who was a great President.

"He was happy to assume the role of quiet adviser after his time in the role and I benefitted from his advice and experience on occasions, something he was generous with and happy to provide.

"On behalf of the wider GAA family I pass on my condolences to his wife Peggy, his children, immediate family and his wide circle of friends and admirers."
