First Ever Auckland GAA Kids Cúl Camp

May 03, 2013
The first ever Auckland GAA Kids Cúl Camp commenced on Monday 29th April at Fowld's Park, Rocky Nook Ave, Morningside, Auckland. This was held from 9.00 am to 4.00pm over the duration of two days.

The Auckland GAA Kids Cúl Camp structure was based on the Irish GAA Kids Cúl Camp. The programme involved coaching from the "Fun Do Football" skills and techniques syllabus. Catching, Kicking & Passing skills were some of the skills taught. The coaches involved were National GAA Coaching Officer (New Zealand) Brian Walsh and New Zealand League Ladies League Winner, Penni Ward.

The Auckland GAA Kids Cúl Camp provided boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 12 with an action packed and fun filled days of activity during the summer holidays which revolve around maximising enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic Games. Some key benefits of the Kids GAA Camp include optimising learning, enhancing friendships, improving physical & psychological wellbeing as well as promoting school and club links.

National GAA Coaching Officer (New Zealand) Brian Walsh was the main organiser of the event. He thanked Katie McMahon, Harps GAA Club, Carmel Ryan, Vice President Auckland GAA, Penni Ward, Emerald City GAA Club, Gemma Brennan, Harps GAA & Margaret Greer, Club Manager Auckland Irish Society for their assistance in helping ensure this was a great success.

Every child who participated got either a Cúl Camp Kit or a Gaelic Football. They were also presented with a certificate on completion. When one of kids was asked what they liked about the programme, Jack Duffy (10) exclaimed "Loved it. Learning new skills and a new game". Parent Sarah Freeman stated "Both Harrison and Samuel seemed to really enjoy it. Thanks to everyone involved"

Auckland GAA Kids Cúl Camp organiser Brian Walsh stated "it was a fantastic experience for all involved. Some of the kids had never seen or played gaelic football before the cul camp. They loved the mix of skill, speed & fun in playing this exciting team sport. We've found some future stars of the game in New Zealand!"

The next camp will be held during the October school holidays. Hurling & Camogie are planned to be introduced to the cul camp syllabus.

Auckland GAA is looking at expanding the youth development programme into schools across Auckland in the near future.
