The Cocks come out Fighting

The Fighting Cocks celebrate their 2012 Carlow IFC final win.
Carlow club The Fighting Cocks are up in arms over a move by the Carlow County Committee to change the format of the local club football championship.

Under the proposals on the table put forward by the County Committee, last year's Intermediate winners would be denied the right to compete at senior level in 2013.

The Fighting Cocks successfully appealed the County Committee's proposal to Leinster Council back in December but the top table are, it appears, returning with the same plan.

A statement issued by the Fighting Cocks club secretary Niall Byrne reads: "A New year has dawned in Carlow GAA circles but one thing remains the same and that is the proposal to put the 2012 intermediate champions back into the intermediate championship for 2013.

"Carlow Co Board are bringing their new proposals to radically overhaul the football championships for this year before a county committee meeting against on Thursday, January 10.

"This is after a long and hard-fought battle by the Fighting Cocks GFC to have their voice heard and having Carlow Co Board see sense and give clubs a bit of notice about their proposals.

"The Fighting Cocks GFC successfully brought an appeal before Leinster Council on December 6 which they had hoped would make Carlow Co Board wake up and smell the coffee and realise that the only gripe they had with the proposed plans was the timing and to re-word their proposal to allow for a one year lean in period.

"Leinster Council upheld the Fighting Cocks appeal and in their reply referred the matter back to Carlow County Committee for reprocessing. It is the Fighting Cocks opinion that reprocessing meant to go back to the drawing board and come up with a fairer proposal and not to just simply bring the same proposal again and rush it through.

"Having attended the Leinster Council meeting to represent the Fighting Cocks I cannot believe that Carlow Co Board are ploughing ahead. You would think that they would see sense and realise that they've gotten enough bad press on this one and try to facilitate our cause.

"It all boils down to this the clubs of Carlow have to decide whether they want to row in behind an idea which is unfair, unsporting and untried for the coming year or whether they want to reject this proposal and enter into a proper consultation process allowing all clubs to have a say and not just be handed a finished product and told this is it the best we could possibly hope for.

"I would appeal to the clubs of Carlow and Carlow Co Board to hear our voice and put this proposal off for one year so as to give every club due notice of what is planned, this is the only way to proceed in the interest of fair play and justice."
