Skryne club celebrating 75 years in Meath senior ranks
October 02, 2012
This year Skryne club is celebrating its 75th year of continuous competition in the Meath Senior ranks. The club won the Intermediate football title in 1937 and have competed in all Senior championships since. This leaves them as the longest serving club in the Senior ranks in Meath Football. While being 75 years in the Senior ranks is an immense achievement the club is interested to know what other clubs (football or hurling) have this distinction, or indeed greater, and would like to make contact with them. Skryne not only are celebrating this 75th anniversary but also the 125th anniversary of Gaelic football being played in the parish. The early clubs were not always called Skryne but they did eventually merge to form the current Skryne club in 1906.
Skryne have won the Meath Senior championship on 13 occasions the most recent in 2010. Every Meath team to win the All Ireland Senior Football Championship have had at least one Skryne player on the field and usually two or more with also a few more panel members.
Some of the great names to be associated with Skryne include, Paddy (Hands) O'Brien and Michael O'Brien, (1949/54) Paddy Mulvanny (1967), Colm O'Rourke and Liam Hayes(1987/88), Trevor Giles and John McDermot (1996/99). All household names in any GAA house.
A gala night to celebrate these two anniversaries will be held on 17 November 2012, and the club is inviting its many former members who are scattered in far flung places to be part of the celebrations. This will contribute to Skryne's efforts for the "Gathering" to be held next year, although it will occur in 2012. The organising committee would like therefore to be in a position to contact other clubs in Ireland who have also played in the Senior ranks of either Football or Hurling for a 75 year continuous period and would be grateful for any help anyone could give in the research. What is needed is the Club and County name. The year they went Senior and the number of County Senior titles they have won. Remember this is for clubs who have a continuous period of 75 years or greater in the Senior ranks without relegation.
