Mayo warn of bogus fundraisers

August 17, 2012
Mayo County Board have warned people to be wary of fraudsters, who are soliciting funds in the name of the county and the Mayo Team Training Fund.

In the run up to the Connacht champions All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin on September 2, Mayo claim that a number of unofficial sources have been raising funds, and falsely claiming the funds are going directly to Mayo GAA.

It is not a new phenomenon, with the GAA in the past trying to clamp down on unofficial wall calendars.

In a statement released today Mayo said: "It has come to the attention of Coiste Chontae Mhaigheo that there are individuals and companies claiming to be involved in raising funds in support of Mayo GAA and the Mayo Team Training Fund.

"Coiste Chontae Mhaigheo has been informed that these groups are claiming that they have the approval of the County Board to raise these funds and to sell advertising in support of Mayo GAA.

"The only organisation permitted to raise funds for the support of Mayo teams is Cáirde Mhaigheo. All contributions to the Cáirde Mhaigheo Team Training Fund are used to support all of the following Mayo teams that take the field to represent our county."
