Meath legend Murphy makes hurling debut

As determined as ever Ollie Murphy gets in his shot for Gaeil Colmcille during the Meath SHC clash with Killyon at Longwood
Ollie Murphy made his Meath SHC debut at the ripe old age of 37 last night.

The former All-Ireland winner and All Star lined out in his customary corner forward position for Kells club Gaeil Colmcille in their 0-11 to 0-20 defeat to Killyon in Longwood. Murphy, who still plays club football with Carnaross and is managing Meath junior outfit Meath Hill, played hurling in his younger days before concentrating solely on football.

"Ollie approached us a couple of months ago about reviving his hurling career before he retires, and we were delighted to accommodate him. He played a few junior games before making his senior championship debut last night," a Gaeil Colmcille source told hoganstand.com

Murphy is fondly remembered by Meath fans for his goal in the 1999 All-Ireland final victory over Cork and his brilliant performances in the 2001 championship, when the Royals won the Leinster title but suffered a surprise All-Ireland final loss to Galway.
