Mother's outrage at 'IRA medals'
June 05, 2012
The mother of an 11-year-old gaelic footballer has expressed her outrage after a Tyrone club presented her son with a medal emblazoned with the face of an IRA man shot dead in 1990.
BBC Northern Ireland reports that Galbally Pearse's GAA club gave medals to their Under 12 team last weekend that had a photo of IRA man Martin McCaughey printed on them.
McCaughey (23) was shot dead by SAS soldiers along with fellow IRA man Dessie Grew near Loughall, County Armagh in October 1990.
"It was outrageous. My son was asking what the hero did," the mother, who did not want to be named, told the BBC. "We had no warning that the medals would be dedicated to a dead IRA man.
"I think we should have at least been told what the medals would have on them and given a chance to decide whether we wanted our children to take part or not."
A Tyrone spokesperson said: "If the mother wants to make a complaint she should make it to club offices or speak to a member of the Tyrone county board. We will obviously look at it then."
A spokesman for the Ulster Council said: "The Ulster Council has no comment to make until we receive official notification from the individual involved."
