Victory is Long' overdue, says Kavanagh

Longford's Brian Kavanagh
Longford's Brian Kavanagh is desperate to end his losing streak against Laois.

The Kilmacud Crokes forward has lost three times in the championship to the O'Moore County since 2007 and is hoping for a change of fortunes in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday.

"From a Longford man's point of view, we've struggled against them," he told The Evening Herald.

"We lost to them in '07, we lost to them in '08 and we lost to them last year as well so that's three beatings I've experienced. Laois have had different expectations but it's about time we addressed it ourselves and try to get one over them because they have inflicted enough damage on us over the years."

Longford lifted the Allianz League Division 3 title last month, but Kavanagh acknowledges that they are facing a step-up in class this weekend.

"Laois are playing the best teams in the country in Dublin, Cork and Kerry and putting it up to them and unlucky to lose some of them.

"But I suppose we look at it from the point of view that it's hard to beat winning and getting that bit of momentum. Other years we've being going into the championship in hope rather than confidence so I suppose we would like to think we're a bit more confident that we can win a few games."
