Clancy takes charge of Garrycastle

Laois selector and former Galway star Paul Clancy
Former Galway forward Paul Clancy has been appointed manager of beaten AIB All-Ireland club football finalists Garrycastle.

The Moycullen native, who kicked two points in Galway's 2001 All-Ireland final victory over Meath, takes over from another Galway man, Anthony Cunningham, who has left to manage the Tribesmen hurlers. Cunningham enjoyed three hugely successful years at the Garrycastle helm, during which time he led the Athlone club to a hat-trick of Westmeath SFC titles, last year's Leinster club title and an All-Ireland final appearance which ended in defeat to Crossmaglen after a replay at the end of March.

Garrycastle recently began their quest for a fourth successive Flanagan Cup when they drew with Tyrrellspass. Selector Aidan Dunning filled in as manager on the day.

Clancy served as a Laois selector under Justin McNulty last year, having previously been involved with DIT in the Sigerson Cup. He also guided the Dublin college to an All-Ireland Freshers championship success in 2009.

Clancy could yet have exclusive access to Dessie Dolan for the rest of the season after he didn't appear for Westmeath in today's SF challenge against Meath in Boardsmill. The 2004 All Star is unlikely to re-join Pat Flanagan's squad so close to their Leinster SFC opener against Louth on Sunday week.
