Seamus McEnaney fielded a strong team and the Royals had little difficulty in defeating neighbours Westmeath in a senior football challenge to mark the opening of a second pitch at Boardsmill just outside Trim. Pat Flanagan started with only three of the team named in the programme.

The challenge marked John Evans' first game as Meath coach. The former Tipperary manager will be happy with his first match on Royal soil.

Joe Sheridan made his return to the Meath colours. The Seneschalstown clubman returned from America to take his place on the edge of the square. Sheridan turned in a very good performance and capped it with two fine goals.

Peadar Byrne also made a return for the Royals. Byrne wore the number 8 jersey and played with great effect around the middle. The Ballinlough man also got in on the goalscoring act blasting home in the first half.

Meath led at the interval 2-6 to 0-3. Byrne opened the scoring and within five minutes Brian Farrell had registered 1-2 to put Meath well in control. Meath led 2-6 to 0-1 after twenty five minutes. Points from Michael Ennis and Alan Giles gave Westmeath some hope going in to the second half.

Meath started the stronger again. Points from Jamie Queeney, Bryan Menton, Sheridan and Cian Ward had the gap out to 13 points. Joe Sheridan fisted a high centre to the net and Meath were 3-10 to 0-3 ahead. Within five minutes Sheridan had his second goal and the game was as good as over. Both teams introduced a host of subs and Westmeath finished with a flourish. Points from Damien McDermott, Alan Giles (3), Michael Curley painted a better picture on the scoreboard for a very disappointing Westmeath team.
