The first competitive win of 2012 went to Galway footballers this evening as they overcame Sligo IT in gale force condition at the Connacht Centre of Excellence in Ballyhaunis.

It was a night of firsts as Alan Mulholland made his debut as manager of the Tribesmen and it was also the first game at the impressive Connacht GAA venue.

Backed by the strong wing, the college side led 0-6 to 0-3 at the break with Sligo ace Kenneth Sweeney impressive.

Shane Maughan, who landed two first half points for Galway, levelled the game immediately on the restart with a goal.

Sligo retook the lead with their only point of the half but slowly Galway took control and reeled off the last four points of the game to claim the spoils, with Niall Coleman and Paul Conroy landing the last two scores.
