Kerry fans voice disapproval over new crest

Kerry's Paul Galvin
Unhappy Kerry supporters have voiced their disapproval at the decision to change the county's GAA crest.

The Kerry county board took the decision to change the crest as they did not have copyright for the previous motif, with chairman Jerome Conway explaining that the new crest is set to create a cash windfall for the county board in terms of merchandise sales.

"As the time goes on, it could be quite substantial as we will have our own shop in the proposed new Kerry GAA museum in Killarney," Mr Conway told the Irish Examiner.

However, some Kerry supporters have stated on the county's official GAA Facebook page, and other fan forums, that they will not be being purchasing the new jersey, with one fan posting a message on supporters' website urging people to sign a petition objecting to the new crest.

"It's time that the people of Kerry took a stand. We will not stop until the county board changes it back to the old one that has become synonymous with the proud history and tradition of the GAA," he wrote.

The new crest will feature on all Kerry inter-county jerseys and merchandise from 2012.
