Donegal SFC: Murphy inspires Glenswilly

October 03, 2011

Donegal's Michael Murphy
Michael Murphy bagged 1-7 as Glenswilly overcame St. Michael's to claim their first ever Donegal SFC title at MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey yesterday.

Glenswilly 1-8
St. Michael's 0-9

The Donegal captain was the star of the show as Glenswilly edged a close contest which was played before a 7,000-strong crowd. St. Michael's, who were appearing in their first senior final, had good performances from county stars Christy Toye and Colm McFadden, but neither of them could match the scoring heroics of Murphy at the other end of the pitch, who accounted for all but one point of his side's tally.

A nervous-looking St. Michael's were slow to settle and found themselves 0-1 to 0-4 in arrears after 18 minutes. But a McFadden brace sent the sides into the break level on 0-4 apiece.

The losers took the lead for the first and only time 11 minutes into the second half, but then Murphy fielded a high ball before turning and blasting to the net, and Glenswilly were back in the driving seat.

Toye brought the wearers of red and white level again before Murphy hit three unanswered points in the final 10 minutes to seal a famous victory and spark wild celebrations as Glenswilly captain Gary McFadden was presented with the Dr Maguire Cup. The victory made amends for Glenswilly's 2007 final loss to neighbours St. Eunan's.
