Hectic weekend in football championship
July 04, 2011
Kerry are the first county to book a place in the 2011 GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Quarter-finals and now it's the turn of Dublin and Wexford to attempt to claim the second spot when they meet in the Leinster final in Croke Park on Sunday (2.00pm).
Its Round 2 weekend in the GAA Football qualifiers with eight games (Round 1 winners v beaten provincial semi-finalists) on the Saturday programme in order to clear the way for Round 3 a week later. Kerry's three-point win over Cork in the Munster final on Sunday earned them a place
n the All-Ireland Quarter-final for a 11th successive year, making them the only county
to reach the last eight every year since the championship format was changed in 2001.
DUBLIN v WEXFORD
They meet for the third time in four seasons in the Leinster championship with Wexford seeking their first championship success over Dublin since winning a Leinster semi-final by 2-7 to 0-7 in Carlow in 1956.
Dublin are seeking their 50th title and their sixth in seven seasons, having won in 2005- 06-07-08-09. Wexford are chasing their 11th title and their first since 1945. Dublin beat Wexford in last year's Leinster quarter-final while the counties last clashed in the Leinster final on 2008 when Dublin won by 3-23 to 0-9. It was evenly contested in the first half with Dublin leading by 0-10 to 0-7 at half time but they ran away with the second half, out-scoring Wexford by 3-13 to 0-2.
Alan Brogan (1-3), Diarmuid Connolly (1-3), Conal Keaney (0-6) and 'Mossy' Quinn
(0-5) were Dublin's top scorers.

Bernard Brogan (2-4), 'Mossy' Quinn (0-4) and Conal Keaney (0-3) were top scorers for Dublin while Matty Forde (0-7) was Wexford's top marksman.
Previous Dublin-Wexford Leinster Finals
They last met in the Leinster final in 2008 but, prior to that, they hadn't met since 1933. It was an extremely busy rivalry in the years before that with no fewer than
fourteen Leinster final meetings between 1890 and 1933. Three finished level, one was unfinished, Dublin won seven and Wexford won three.

SATURDAY: GAA FOOTBALL QUALIFIERS (ROUND 2)
LAOIS v KILDARE, PORTLAOISE, 7.00pm
2011 Championship
Laois 0-10 Longford 0-9; Dublin 1-16 Laois 0-11
Kildare 0-12 Wicklow 0-5; Kildare 0-16 Meath 0-10; Dublin 1-12 Kildare 1-11
They last met in the championship in the 2009 Leinster semi-final when Kildare won by 2-18 to 0-9 in Tullamore. Laois won the previous two Leinster championship clashes with Kildare in 2005 (0-21 to 0-9) and 2003 (2-13 to 1-13).
The counties clashed in the Allianz League (Division II) on March 13 last with Kildare winning by 1-13 to 1-11 in Newbridge. Laois led by a point with five minutes remaining but Kildare scored two late points to edge to victory.
Kildare have made excellent use of the qualifiers over the last three seasons, reaching the All-Ireland quarter-final in 2008 and 2009 and the semi-final last year. Laois last won a qualifier tie in 2008, beating Longford before losing to Down.
MEATH v GALWAY, NAVAN, 7.00pm
2011 Championship
Kildare 0-16 Meath 0-10; Meath 5-8 Louth 2-8
Mayo 1-12 Galway 1-6
They last met in the championship in 2007 when Meath won a fourth round qualifier tie by 2-14 to 1-14 in Portlaoise in a game where Stephen Bray scored 2-2 and Brian Farrell 0-6 for the winners while Michael Meehan (1-5) and Nicky Joyce (0-5) were Galway's top marksmen.
Prior to that, the last championship meeting between the counties was in 2001 when Galway won the All-Ireland final by 0-17 to 0-8.
Meath have made good use of the qualifiers in recent years, reaching the All-Ireland semi-final in 2007 and 2009. Galway won the All-Ireland final, via the qualifiers, in 2001 but have done poorly since then. Indeed, their only qualifier win since 2001 was against Louth in 2004.
LONGFORD v TYRONE, PEARSE PARK, 7.00pm
2011 Championship
Laois 0-10 Longford 0-9; Longford 2-16 Cavan 0-11
Tyrone 1-13 Monaghan 1-11; Donegal 2-6 Tyrone 0-9
A first championship clash between the counties as Longford attempt to land another
big scalp in Pearse Park, having beaten Mayo there last year. They later lost to Down.
Tyrone's attempt to win a third successive Ulster title ended in the semi-final when
they lost to Donegal but they have done well in the qualifiers over the years, winning
both the 2005 and 2008 All-Ireland titles via that route.
Longford's best run in the qualifiers was in 2006 when they won the first three rounds
before losing to Kerry in Round 4.
ARMAGH v WICKLOW, MORGAN ATHLETIC GROUNDS, 7.00pm
2011 Championship
Armagh 1-15 Down 1-10; Derry 3-14 Armagh 1-11.
Kildare 0-12 Wicklow 0-5; Wicklow 1-18 Sligo 0-16 A first championship clash between the counties. It promises to be a special occasion as Mick O'Dwyer takes Wicklow to the revamped Morgan Athletic Grounds to take on a home side that started the Ulster campaign well with a win over Down before losing the semi-final to Derry. Their best qualifier run was in 2003 when they reached the All-Ireland final (losing to Tyrone) via the second chance route. Wicklow's best qualifier run was two years ago when they won three games to reach Round 4 where they lost to Kildare. Wicklow will be encouraged by the 2009 experience as their three first round victims were all Ulster counties, Fermanagh, Cavan and Down. All three games were played in Aughrim.
DOWN V LEITRIM, NEWRY 3.00pm
2011 Championship
Armagh 1-15 Down 1-10; Down 1-13 Clare 1-12
Leitrim 1-10 Sligo 0-10; Roscommon 2-12 Leitrim 0-6
They meet for the first time in the championship with Leitrim still seeking their first win in the qualifiers. It leaves themselves and Waterford as the only counties still waiting for a qualifier win. In contrast, Down made great use of the second chance last year, advancing from Round 2 of the qualifiers to reach the All-Ireland final where they lost to Cork.
LIMERICK v OFFALY, GAELIC GROUNDS, 2.00pm
2011 Championship
Kerry 1-26 Limerick 3-9; Wexford 2-16 Offaly 0-8; Offaly 1-18 Monaghan 1-10
They last met in the qualifiers (Round 2) in 2002 when Limerick won by 3-9 to 2-7 in the Gaelic Grounds. The sides met in the Allianz League (Division 3) last February when Offaly won by 2-10 to 1-12. Limerick led by two points at half-time but Offaly fought back to edge home by a single point. They did extremely well in the first round of qualifiers, easily beating Monaghan who played in Division 1 last spring. Limerick qualified for Round 4 of the qualifiers last year as runners-up in Munster and took Cork to extra-time before losing by two points.
ANTRIM v CARLOW, CASEMENT PARK, 3.00pm
2011 Championship
Donegal 1-10 Antrim 0-7; Antrim 0-16 Westmeath 1-7.
Carlow 0-14 Louth 0-13; Wexford 4-12 Carlow 0-10.
A rare second round qualifier appearance for both counties. Carlow last won a qualifier tie in 2005 when they beat Offaly while Antrim's only qualifier win was against Leitrim ten years ago. Carlow did very well to beat Louth in this year's Leinster quarter-final round before losing to Wexford in the semi-final. Antrim lost to Donegal in Ulster but got back on track with a fine win over Westmeath in the first round qualifiers.
LONDON v WATERFORD, RUISLIP, 6.30pm
2011 Championship
Mayo 0-19 London 2-10 (After extra-time); London 0-15 Fermanagh 0-9
Cork 5-17 Waterford 2-8
A first championship meeting between the counties. London are enjoying a great summer, having taken Mayo into extra-time in the Connacht quarter-final before winning their first ever qualifier tie when beating Fermanagh two weeks ago. Waterford are seeking their first ever qualifier win.
