Comortas Peile na Gaeltachta: Donegal pull off double
June 07, 2011
There was double delight for Donegal at the Comórtas Peile na Gealtachta in Falcarragh yesterday as hosts Cloughaneely collected their third All-Ireland senior title with a two-point victory over Galway side Moycullen, while Naomh Mhuire took the junior title at the expense of Antrim's Laochra Loch Laoi.
Cloughaneely defeated Moycullen on a 0-11 to 1-6 scoreline to add to the titles they won in 1992 and '93. Favoured by the breeze in the first half, the winners opened with points from Sean Maguire and Ciaran Scanlon before they were rocked by a 13th minute Raymond Hogan goal for Moycullen. However, the home side recovered to take a slender 0-5 to 1-1 lead into the break.
Hogan levelled for the visitors shortly after the restart before Cloughaneely went three clear with scores from Boyle, Shaun McGarvey and Maguire. Moycullen narrowed the gap again before Maguire hit the insurance point for the locals.
In the junior final, Naomh Mhuire of Annagry staged a great comeback to edge out Laochra Loch Laoi by 0-14 to 0-13. The winning point was scored by substitute Sean Boyle two minutes into injury-time.
After being level at half-time, Laochra Loch Laoi opened up a 0-12 to 0-7 lead on the resumption thanks to points from Paddy Cunningham, Sean MacCathail, Brendan O Brolchain and Cathal O Ceallaigh, but Naomh Mhuire rallied in the final 10 minutes with scores from Ciaran McGinley, Harry Harden, Tom McHugh, Sean Boyle and Owen Grant before Boyle grabbed the winner.
