Scoreboard controversy "not an issue" - Monaghan

Monaghan's Pete Dooney
Monaghan GAA insist that they have no complaints despite the dissatisfactory conclusion to the Cadbury Ulster U21 semi-final against Tyrone.

Down by a single point as the game drew to a conclusion, Monaghan were presented with a chance to level matters with a last-minute free.

However, there was some confusion around Brewster Park as the scoreboard showed that Tyrone were in a two-point lead - when the reality was that just one point separated the sides.

Midfielder Pete Dooney took the kick but instead of aiming for the equalising point, the Aughnamullen Sarsfields youngster dropped the ball into the square, and the Tyrone defence was able to clear.

Some observers - including Monaghan senior player Dick Clerkin on Twitter - felt that the Monaghan players may have been swayed by the incorrect scoreboard, but County Board PRO Siobhan McQuillan insists that there is no ill-will in Monaghan circles.

Speaking to hoganstand.com, she said, "The supporters knew that the last [Tyrone] point was disallowed, and it's not an issue. I have spoken to the chairman and I've spoken to the secretary and we've no issue with the situation.

"He [Pete Dooney] didn't hit it direct. I don't know, I can't say what a young fella out on the field sees, I'm sure that whatever he did was for the best. The only thing I have to say is that this is not an issue for Monaghan. The game is finished, it's done, it's dusted.

"All I would say is that I would be very proud with how that U21 team played last night. We got the Cadbury Man of the Match award [for forward Chris McGuinness], and I would be very proud of the team and how they performed."
