Just a few weeks after declaring his football career was over due to injury, former Laois footballer Tom Kelly lined out for his club St Joseph's last weekend.

Kelly was advised by doctors to call time on his career after he suffered a broken neck playing for the club against Arles-Killeen last April.

However, just six weeks after being quoted as saying that he was retired from all football, the former All-Star was back in action when he came on as a substitute against The Heath last weekend.

It is an amazing comeback by Kelly, who has been blighted by injuries over the past few years, but his return has been welcomed by his club mates.

"We were delighted to see him come on," said St Joseph's chairman Mick Moore. "It was a horrific injury he suffered and it was a long road back with Saturday the first step.

"It was always his ambition that he would come back and play. He didn't want an injury to finish it for him. Everyone knows his quality and determination and he's always had that."
