Pearson sets sights on promotion

Cavan's Gerald Pearson
Gerald Pearson believes Cavan's aim for 2011 has to be to achieve promotion from Division Three of the National Football League.

The Gowna man, who has admitted that he wouldn't be in the country were it not for football, impressed after scoring 0-3 as a replacement for Sean Johnston in last Saturday night's Dr McKenna Cup defeat to Derry and feels that with Val Andrews and Terry Hyland back in charge of the team the right men are at the helm to help the Breffni men improve their fortunes.

"We are a work in progress but we have two good men at the helm," said Pearson. "They (Andrews and Hyland) were there before and I was in with them the last time so I know what they are like. There are a couple of lads left on the panel since they were in charge and we nearly won Ulster the last time they were in charge.

"We are in Division Three but our aim has to be to get out of there. We need to start pushing teams like we did against Derry on Saturday night. It is no good just pushing them either, when you play at this level you have to go and win."

Next up for Cavan in the Dr McKenna Cup is a trip to Inniskeen to take neighbours Monaghan tomorrow night and Pearson knows that this time the Blues will be underdogs going into the game, in contrast to past occasions.

He said: "They have got ahead of us in the past couple of years. When we play Monaghan now we are very much the underdogs. But, as I said, we have to get up to the standards of those teams and that's what we are working on now."
