Walsh rejects players' plea to bring O hAilpin back

Cork's Sean Og O'hAilpin
Cork hurling boss Denis Walsh is sticking by his decision to drop Sean O hAilpin from his squad, despite a direct appeal being made to him by a delegation of Cork players recently.

The delegation sought to have O hAilpin reinstated, but was told the decision to drop the 2005 All-Ireland winning captain had been made purely for hurling reasons and that it was the manager's remit to make decisions regarding team matters and selection.

With no further questions being presented, the meeting ended at that.

According to The Sunday Independent, there had been unrest in the squad over O hAilpin's shock axing, leading to fears that the manager was facing a revolt from senior members of the panel. When just five players turned up for a recent fitness assessment, these fears were heightened, but it later emerged that a number of players were unable to attend due to holidays and club commitments.

O hAilpin's younger brother Aisake has already quit the panel in protest at the management's decision and has returned to Australia where he will resume his Aussie Rules career in the New Year.
