'Bull' calls time

Waterford's Brian Phelan
Ahead of his side's Munster club SHC final against Thurles Sarsfields on Sunday, De la Salle star Brian 'The Bull' Phelan has decided to end his inter-county career after eight years.

The 31-year-old is an integral part of the De La Salle side looking to win their second Munster title in three years, but he has struggled to nail down a regular place on the Waterford team since Davy Fitzgerald took over from Justin McCarthy in 2008.

Having joined the panel in 2002, Phelan had to wait till 2004 to make his championship debut against Clare, but he went on to become a regular in the side over the next three years either at wing back or midfield.

However, his chances have been limited since Davy Fitz came in and he has not played in the championship since the win over Wexford in the 2008 All-Ireland quarterfinal.

Phelan now follows former county team mate Dan Shanahan into retirement, but for this week he will be concentrating on the Munster club final.
