Horan appointed in Limerick
October 13, 2010
Former Limerick footballer Maurice Horan
Maurice Horan was ratified as Limerick's new football manager for a one-year term at last night's county board meeting.
A member of the Na Piarsaigh club and a native of Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, Horan takes over from Mickey Ned O'Sullivan, who stood down after five years following the Treaty County's All-Ireland qualifier exit at the hands of All-Ireland champions Cork.
Aged just 35, Horan will link up with trainer Ephie Fitzgerald, who managed Nemo Rangers to a four-in-a-row of Cork SFC titles between 2005 and '08, and to two Munster club titles during the same period. As a player with Nemo, Fitzgerald won four All-Ireland and five Munster club medals. He also won two All-Ireland under 21s medals with Cork along with a Munster senior medal.
Horan managed the Limerick under 21 footballers this year as well as serving as a senior selector under O'Sullivan.
Horan belatedly made his Mayo senior debut as a 27-year-old in 2003 before work commitments brought him to Limerick. He transferred to Monaleen and played a number of games for Limerick before injury forced him to take a break from the game.
He has been involved with the Na Piarsaigh intermediate footballers for the past two years.
