Mayo mourns Ger Feeney
October 11, 2010
Mayo GAA is in mourning following the tragic death of former county footballer Ger Feeney in a boating accident yesterday.
Feeney and his businessman friend Donal McEllin were found drowned in the harbour at Inishbofin off Galway yesterday morning. Aged 56, Feeney was due to travel to New York for last night's Connacht FBD League final between Mayo and the Exiles, but decided not to after his adopted Castlebar Mitchels qualified for next Sunday's Mayo SFC final against his native Ballintubber.
The deceased became involved with Castlebar after taking up residence in the town many years ago and two of his sons, Richie and Alan, are due to line out in the county final against a Ballintubber side who are captained by his nephew John.
Ger, who was a brother of Mayo county secretary Sean Feeney, was a star player for the Western County during the 1970s, winning All-Ireland minor and under 21 medals in 1971 and '74 respectively. An attacking wing back, he played for more than a decade with the Mayo seniors and was an All-Star replacement at the height of his career.
