Lyons favourite to land Mayo post
September 24, 2010

Former Dublin manager Tommy Lyons
Tommy Lyons has overtaken John Maughan as the bookies' favourite to become the next Mayo football manager.
With interviews with the four remaining candidates currently taking place and a decision due on John O'Mahony's successor early next week, former Dublin and Offaly boss Lyons' odds have been slashed, with some bookmakers having even suspending betting.
John Maughan has drifted from 4-6 to 5-2, James Horan is priced at 2-1, while Anthony McGarry is the outsider at 14-1.
A native of Mayo, Lyons made his name in management with Kilmacud Crokes when he guided them to an All-Ireland club title in 1995. He subsequently managed Offaly for three years, leading them to Leinster championship and National League honours in 1997 and '98 respectively before taking charge of Dublin in late 2001.
Lyons steered the Dubs to their first Leinster title in seven years the following summer, but heartbreak followed when they lost to Armagh by a single point in the All-Ireland semi-final. Things turned sour after that, though, with Leinster championship losses to Laois and Westmeath in 2003 and 2004 leading to him being replaced as manager by Paul Caffrey in 2005.
