Monaghan have taken the lead after the first day of the GAA Legends All-Ireland Golf Charity event being played at La Cala Resort on Spain's Costa del Sol.
The three-day competition began on Wednesday, May 12th and involves teams from the 32 counties, comprised of former star hurlers and footballers. Each team raises funds for their chosen charity and last year's event, also played at La Cala, resulted in €60,000 being distributed among a range of worthy causes. Monaghan only hold the lead on a count back with Tipperary and Longford on the same score. The president of the GAA, Christy Cooney, who is also participating, says the fundraiser is already an important event for the association.
"This is now a permanent fixture in the GAA calendar with the money raised benefiting those who need it most in our communities. It is appropriate it is now an official charity of the GAA." The Chairperson of the organising committee, Bernard Flynn, says that traditionally there has been a great bond between GAA players when they retire, especially on the golf course. "It has been an important factor in cementing many of those friendships thus leading to this unique event. It is nice as a group to give something back."
La Cala Resort is owned by the Irish company, FBD Insurance plc. It is the largest golf resort in Spain with three 18-hole courses and a par 3 course amongst a wide range of top-class sporting facilities. Earier this year the Waterford senior hurlers used the resort as a winter training base.
