Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Críostóir Ó Cuana launched the 2010 GAA Legends All-Ireland Charity Golf Inter-County Championships which takes place in La Cala Resort, Costa del Sol between May 12 and 15.

The charity, which is one of the Association's two official charities for 2009 / 2010, involves teams from all 32 counties, made up of former inter-county footballers and hurlers competing in a golf championship for the top prize.

The combined monies collected from all teams entered will be divided between the chosen charities of the winning team.

The GAA President is delighted to officially endorse the charity and their work for the first time.

He said: "We are delighted to throw our support behind this event and hope that it proves to be every bit as successful as previous competitions.

"It is heartening to see former players, so many of whom made fantastic contributions to the Association both on and off the playing fields, coming together to give something back. Their work and dedication to this project, even in these straitened times, is a huge source of encouragement.

"The camaraderie and special bond that exists between the players is the driving force behind this annual venture and I know there will be appreciative charitable organisations benefiting from the work and golf between now and May."

Organising committee Chairperson Bernard Flynn, thanked the GAA for their support and also acknowledged the fundraising efforts of the players

He added: "I thank the GAA for their support of this event and the official recognition from Croke Park, a place we all hold dear, was a real boost when it came.

"Economically things have changed considerably compared to when we came up with the original idea for this but I have already witnessed our captains tackling the fundraising with the same vigour and enthusiasm that have been hallmarks of previous competitions.

"Personally I look forward to seeing so many former team mates and opponents once again in a competitive setting but this time charities around the country have the potential to be the real winner depending on who it is that emerges on top after the golf is finished."
