Louth vote to change crest

December 15, 2009

Louth Chairman Padraig O'Connor.
A motion to remove the Boyne Cable Bridge from the Louth GAA crest was overwhelmingly carried at last night's county convention in Lordship. Tabling the motion, the O'Rahallaigh's club in Drogheda claimed the bridge wasn't even in Co. Louth and therefore should be removed from the crest, which was only redesigned a few years ago. There were sweeping changes to the Louth executive, meanwhile, with seven of the outgoing officers no longer involved. Padraig O'Connor defeated Thomas O hEochaidh by 97 votes to 37 to be elected chairman in succession to the retiring Paddy Oliver. However, the biggest talking point was Des Halpenny's landslide victory over current incumbent Pat Hamilton for the secretary's position. The John Mitchell's man won by 102 votes to 31. Along with Oliver and Hamilton, the other outgoing officials who either stepped down or failed to be re-elected were Brian Moroney, Ronan Lynch, Aidan Halpin, Thomas McNamee and Tony Reynolds.
