December 07, 2009
Moycarkey-Borris native Willie Cashin was elected as Chair of the European County Board in Madrid (Sunday 6th), at the European County Convention. Cashin, who is a founding member of Belgium GAA and is resident in Brussels, is the first Tipperary man to lead the European GAA.   Also in attendance were Joe McDonagh, Chair of the Overseas Committee and former President of the GAA, and Pat Quill, President of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association. Cashin, who trained the Belgium ladies football team to victory in the Pan-European Championship this year, expressed his delight at being elected and outlined his commitment to bring GAA on Continental Europe to a new phase of development   "I would like to thank Eileen Jennings of Paris and Mayo for her excellent work done over the past three years in the Chair.  She has spearheaded a massive expansion of Gaelic Games on Continental Europe and she is to be commended for her efforts. "There are huge possibilities for further development in European GAA, be it the great work being done in Brittany, Brussels and other areas in underage development; getting non-Irish involved and also providing a safe harbour for newly arrived in Irish in foreign cities", he concluded. The election to Chair caps an eventful year for Cashin and the club. Cashin played a vital role as a player in winning Belgium GAA's first-ever European hurling championship. The club also recently received a McNamee for best website in the GAA. For more information please contact: PRO Adrian Hiel +32 (0)472 51 70 38 [email protected] www.belgiumgaa.com
