Leinster IHC final: Lachtain's take title
November 23, 2009
Eoin Guinan scored 1-4 as St. Lachtain's of Kilkenny claimed the Leinster IHC title at the expense of Carlow senior champions Mount Leinster Rangers in atrocious conditions at Dr Cullen Park.
St. Lachtain's.1-8
Mount Leinster Rangers0-7
The Freshford club laid the foundations for their victory in the first half when they went into the break on level terms - 0-2 apiece - after playing into the driving rain. Kilkenny star Michael Kavanagh at full back and John Costello at centre back played key roles in keeping the Rangers attack at bay in the first half.
On the restart, Lachtain's stormed into a 0-6 to 0-3 lead by the 38th minute thanks to points from Guinan, Noel Hickey, Bill Beckett and Ollie O'Connor. A pointed free from Denis Murphy was Rangers' sole reply.
And in the 48th minute, team captain Guinan put the result beyond doubt when he scored the only goal after being set up by his brother Paul, who had just come on as a substitute.
That made it 1-7 to 0-5 and there was no way back for the Carlow side after that.
