Waterford hurling boss Davy Fitzgerald is to undergo cardiac surgery later this week. The 37-year-old will be admitted to a Dublin hospital tomorrow to have stents inserted into one of the arteries around his heart because of a blockage. The two-time All-Ireland winning goalkeeper with Clare recently visited a doctor after feeling unwell and was shocked to learn that he would need the operation at such a young age. The problem is normally associated with people in the fifties and sixties, and could cause a heart attack if untreated. "I hope this is not too much of an ordeal - and I'm hoping it will all go well," he said in an interview with the Irish Daily Star. Fitzgerald is a non-drinker and non-smoker, but there is a history of heart conditions in his family, while his life as a businessman and top-flight inter-county hurling manager also brings huge amounts of stress.
