Derry GAA mourns John Murphy

August 19, 2009
Former Derry and Ulster football star John Murphy was laid to rest in Maghera yesterday. A native of Newbridge in South Derry, the 83-year-old was a former headmaster of St. Pius Cross High School in Magherafelt. He was one of the foremost footballers of his generation, winning a National League medal with Derry in 1947. He also played with Ulster in their 1950 Railway Cup success, but didn't receive his medal until last year when he was finally presented with it by Ulster Council president Tom Daly at a special ceremony. Two of his 1947 team-mates - Roddy Gribben and Paddy McErlean - were among the mourners at his funeral in St. Patrick's Church, Glen. They were joined by many of Derry's biggest names from the 1950s, including Jim McKeever, Eoin Gribben, Colm Mulholland and Charlie Higgins.
