Kelly faces battle to retain top Donegal job

November 19, 2008
Donegal chairman Sean Kelly has a battle on his hands to remain in power after six other candidates were nominated for the top position. Kelly was a central figure in the recent football managerial debacle, which could yet have another twist after former players and joint-candidates for the post, Declan Bonner and Charlie Mulgrew, took their case to the Disputes Resolution Authority. The pair were left reeling after being told they were the new joint-managers, only for delegates to refuse to ratify them when John Joe Doherty - who eventually got the job - spoke at a county board meeting. Bonner and Mulgrew called on Kelly and the county executive to resign, but the chairman refused to do so, insisting that the clubs should be let decide at county convention which will take place in Ballybofey on December 11. The outgoing chairman will face competition from vice-chairman and former football manager PJ McGowan, ex-referee Michael McGrath, Eddie Gallagher, Pat McLaughlin, Liam Mac a Bhaird and Sean Dunnion.
