Leinster SFC: Crokes hold out to see off Celbridge
November 03, 2008
Kilmacud Crokes 0-13
Celbridge 0-8
Kilmacud Crokes took their place in the next stage of the Leinster Senior Football Club Championship with a five-point win over Kildare outfit Celbridge at Parnell Park yesterday afternoon.
The Dublin champions had to withstand a brawly second-half display from the first time Kildare SFC winners to them off with late points from Mark Vaughan and Mark Davoren.
It was Crokes who raced into what was almost an unassailable lead after 18 minutes, in front by 0-8 to 0-1 with Longford ace Brian Kavanagh tormenting Celbridge's backs along with the accurate frees of Vaughan.
Crokes lost their captain full-forward Johnny Magee to a dislocated finger, but in fact it was his replacement, Barry O'Rorke, who made sure that the difference stood at six heading in at the interval, with a brace of points.
The trailers continued to put up the scores on the game's resumption and after Crokes centre-back Cian O'Sullivan saw red on 47 minutes, the scores stood at 0-11 to 0-7.
However, Celbridge couldn't find that closing ten-minute spell that had earned them a replay two weeks ago to capture their first senior crown at the next attempt, and it was Crokes that held out to emerge five-point winners.
