Connacht Club SFC: Taylor fires Harps to victory
October 20, 2008
The experienced Paul Taylor bagged 1-6 as Sligo champions Eastern Harps progressed to the second round of the Connacht club football championship with a comfortable victory over Leitrim counterparts Glencar-Manor at Markievicz Park.
Eastern Harps.....1-15
Glencar-Manorhamilton..1-5
All seven of Taylor's scores came in the first half, and helped Harps to recover from a shaky start which saw them concede 1-1 in the opening two minutes. Pat Hickey flicked a breaking ball to the net in the first minute, and that was quickly followed by a point from Dominic Kelly's excellent sideline kick, but that was as good as it got for Glencar-Manor who were outplayed for the rest of the game.
Inspired by Taylor, Ross Donovan, John Rafferty and Danny O'Grady, the home side scored the next four points and although James Glancy replied for Glencar-Manor, the winners notched 1-5 without reply over the next 10 minutes to go into the interval leading 1-9 to 1-2.
The Leitrim kingpins resumed with points from Adrian Croal and substitute Alan Sweeney, but Eastern Harps added five points without reply in the final quarter to secure a place in the next round against Mayo's Ballaghderreen.
