Under 14 Championship Final Day
A large crowd from Derrymacash descended on the Morgan Athletic Grounds on Saturday for the Division Two Championship Final against our parish neighbours. The Tones got off to a strong start with early points settling the nerves. However, the Tones suffered a blow early on with Callan Duffin picking up a knock and unfortunately having to leave the field of play. Our opponents began to come more into the game and went into the lead with a couple of points and a goal. The Tones settled to the task once again and tagged on a number of scores before a Dylan Hoy goal restore the Tones advantage. At half time, the Tones went in two points up on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-4.
The half time team talk obviously did the trick and the Tones came out stronger than ever, tagging on some great scores from Odhrán Magee, Patrick McPartland, Matthew Hosty and Eamonn Coleman who burst up the field from defence. The pressure from the Tones boys was relentless and a sweet left foot kick from man of the match Dylan Hoy sailed over the bar to equal any of the scores witnessed in Croke Park on Sunday. The ball rarely passed the midfield line, but when it did, the superb Tones defence kept the opponents at bay with some great work from Odhrán McCaughley, Oliver McConville, Adam Campbell and Jamie Haughey. Goalkeeper Emmet Tighe showed quick reactions, producing a great stop to prevent a goal opportunity at that end. Goals from the livewire forwards Niall Haughian and Josh Megoran confirmed the dominance of this team all season and sent the Tones support into raptures.
The Tones kept playing to the very end with Andrew Austin producing a great display in spite of playing through the pain barrier and Devon McCorry and Seán Magee continued causing problems up front. Joint captain Dylan Hoy kept driving the boys on and Joe Crilly and Dylan Headley played their part as did Brendan Prunty, James Coleman , Caolán McNally and Oran Carberry. The final whistle saw scenes of joy on the pitch, on the sideline and in the stands as Dylan Hoy led the boys over to receive the trophy where he was joined by joint captain Callan Duffin to hoist the trophy aloft. The final score was Tones 3-15 sarsfields 2-5. Congratulations to Cathal, Brendan, Kieran and Charlie and to this great bunch of players who earned their reward for all their hard work and commitment throughout the year. Comhghairdeas libh agus go n-éirí libh ar an pháirc as seo amach. Well done boys.
Seniors
The Tones made the short journey into Clann Éireann Park on Friday night to open their championship campaign against St Colmcille's from the Grange. David Heaney got the Tones off to a great start with the opening point within a minute, but the Grange were soon off the mark and letting the Derrymacash men know they were in for a big challenge. A number of wides from the Tones showed the early nerves and the Grange went in front on eight minutes. Good scores from Adam McKeever and James Lavery hauled the Tones back in front and a long-range effort from the Grange number 15 levelled matters shortly after. The large Grange support were soon celebrating with a goal on 20 minutes being quickly consolidated by another Grange point. Further wides from David Heaney, Adam McKeever and Shaun Smith didn't help matters for the Tones, but Shane Gallagher placed the ball over the bar before a converted Grange free brought an end to the first half proceedings with the score standing at Tones 0-4 Grange 1-5.
The second half couldn't have started any worse for the Tones with the defence being caught out before the Grange full forward finished brilliantly to the net. The response from the Tones was immediate and in a five minute spell of dominance, Finnian Moriarty, Shaun Smith with two and Adam McKeever brought the Tones to within three. The following ten minute spell was a scrappy affair with both sides guilty of wides as well as a number of errors. Shane Gallagher won a free on 20 minutes which was converted by Finnian Moriarty. The Grange were beginning to feel the pressure as the Tones pushed forward and when the ball fell to James Doyle, he calmly finished to the net to give the Derrymacash men the lead for the first time in 40 minutes. The Grange earned a free, which was put over to leave it level with five minutes to go, but it was the Tones who finished strongest with Ruairí McCaughley popping up for a great score, which was added to by Shaun Smith and James Lavery.
The final score was Tones 1-13 Grange 2-7. It was a good second half performance from the Tones, but much improvement will be needed to see off Lurgan side St Peters in the semi finals on the 15th or 16th September.
Our minors and Under 16s both lost out last week to Middletown and Clan na Gael respectively. The Under 16s play St Brigid's on Thursday evening in Poyntzpass.
