Busy Week of Fixtures
The season is running at a pace now and the fixture list is growing longer and longer each week! Our U12s get their league campaign started tonight (Wednesday) in a local derby against our neighbours from Fr. Daltons. The match is on in Páirc Chiaráin at 6.30pm and it would be great to get home support for this crucial meeting.
Our Intermediates will play a useful challenge match against Galway men Mícheál Breathnach’s in Páirc Chiaráin at 8pm. The Westerners regularly train in the Athlone grounds and a friendship has developed between the two clubs so this should be a good clash for both. It’ll be of particular use to Southern Gaels in their preparation for their opening game in the championship against Cullion over the Easter weekend.
Following their opening league match against Cullion last Monday, the U16s will play their second game against Delvin on Saturday at 2pm in Páirc Chiaráin. It’s a great step forward for the club to be able to compete at this level with a strong panel and this group are at the vanguard of the club development so again if you can get down to support them that would be greatly appreciated.
The first U8 and U10 blitz of the year takes place this Saturday afternoon where Southern Gaels will play host to a variety of teams: U10s facing Castletown Geoghegan, St. Brigid’s and Fr. Dalton’s while the U8s face Wolfe Tones, Turin and St. Brigid’s. These events, as well as being a great celebration of hurling, give the club a chance to see how we are developing in comparison to the other clubs in the area and have proved very useful in the past. This will be a very busy morning so be sure to get down early.
Intermediates downed by Crookedwood
Crookedwood 3-21
Southern Gaels 0-15
An unfortunate Gaels side just couldn’t get a rub of the green last Saturday morning as Crookedwood clocked up three opportunistic goals while their chances flashed over the bar leaving the gap too big to fill in a disappointing away fixture. The score belies the challenge put up by Gaels who lead late in the first half until a goal before the whistle knocked the wind out of their sails and the game drifted away from them shortly after the resumption of play. Positives from the game include a full and fit panel as well as 15 scores which will provide a platform to build on for the forthcoming championship clash against Cullion at Easter.
Marist Hurlers meet Banagher
Many of our clubmen played on the Marist College hurling squad last week in a very exciting challenge match against Banagher where the Faithful men prevailed in the end. The squad is developing well and the combination of hurlers from around the area is proving to be of great benefit to the team. This will be of great use in the forthcoming midland blitz planned for after Easter as the last hurling event of the school year.
Congratulations to the Westmeath Footballers
Great news and an historic double completed by Westmeath as our footballers took silverware in the Division 3 League Final adding to our hurling exploits earlier in the year. Congratulations to all involved and keep up the good work! Westmeath for Sam AND Liam in 2019!!!
