Wexford proved too strong for Westmeath this evening as they booked a 2-17 to 0-13 win in the second round of the Leinster U20 hurling championship this evening in Mullingar.
Oisin Pepper and Shamey O’Hagan netted the second-half goals for the Slaneysiders who finished 10-point victors in the end at TEG Cusack Park.
Four Cian Byrne frees along with points from Pepper and David Codd saw Wexford leading by 0-6 to 0-2 after 10 minutes of this contest and JJ Twamley and Byrne hit points to stretch the advantage to six with 10 minutes left in the first-half.
Westmeath responded with a Shane Williams free and point from Mark Cunningham prior to Williams sending over another that had the margin down to four (0-11 to 0-7) by half-time.
However, hosts would be rocked early in the resumption when Pepper hammered home the game’s first goal on 34 minutes and while points from Williams and Peter Clarke cut the deficit back to four, disaster would hit for the Lake County lads again.
This time O’Hagan provided the finish to the home side’s net after blocking down the goalkeeper and hammering in from close range for three points.
Darragh Carley and Tomas Kinsella shot over the last two scores for Wexford to ensure their double figure win in the end.
The Model County now face Laois in the competition's quarter-finals on April 19th after the O'Moore lads had a comfortable victory over Kildare earlier today in Newbridge.
