Senior A Hurling Championship - Round 4
Lough Lene Gaels........4.17 (29)
Raharney.......................3.19 (28)
Lough Lene Gaels, in the wake of a disappointing result in a Round 3 fixture v Castletown Geoghegan two weeks previously in the SHAC, played defending champions Raharney in a Round 4 fixture of the same competition at Mullingar's TEG Cusack Park on Sunday September 1st.
In terms of the trend of play of this Round 4 fixture, a full quota of sporting clichés and superlatives would certainly be used as forms of description of its general play. After 10 minutes of play, the teams were on level terms, Lough Lene Gaels 1.04 Raharney 1.04.
David Williams scored the Lough Lene Gaels goal from a penalty award. Raharney played with determination for the rest of first half match action thereafter, outscoring Lough Lene Gaels 1.07 to 0.02 in the process.
The match score at half time was, Lough Lene Gaels 1.06 (09) Raharney 2.11 (17). From the start of the second half, Lough Lene Gaels were a team very much "on their game" taking the contest to the Deelside Blues for much of the third quarter of play, Lough Lene Gaels 1.15 (18) Raharney 2.15, the match score at the midway point of the second half, a margin of three points now separating the teams. Early into the second quarter of play, Lough Lene Gaels scored a second goal via Warren Williams. As the play increased in pace, the ball from a Derek McNicholas Lough Lene Gaels goalscoring attempt, hit the Raharney crossbar.
The ball rebounded to the Raharney 20m line. It was also during this phase of play that the ball from a David Williams struck goalscoring attempt hit a upright, rebounding to safety from a Raharney perspective. Three minutes from the end of normal playing time, Raharney's Eoin Keyes scored the Blues third goal, shortly afterwards the same player pointed, leaving Lough Lene Gaels trailing by a margin of six points, Lough Lene Gaels 2.16 Raharney 3.19, as this Round 4 fixture moved towards stoppage time.
David Williams then pointed a free for Lough Lene Gaels in reply.
To be truthful, Lough Lene Gaels looked to be going down to an "honourable defeat" and with it, the end of the SHAC aspirations the Purple and Golds for 2024. Two minutes into stoppage time, Lough Lene Gaels scored a third goal, Shane Williams striking the ball superbly to the Raharney net, leaving the Deelside Blues 3.19 to 3.17 ahead. Lough Lene Gaels then attacked again towards the Cathedral end of TEG Cusack Park, winning a 65m award as a consequence. Raharney, taking no chances, had their XV placed in defensive positions to face the 65m award, that was taken by Michael Daly, which left Lough Lene Gaels goalkeeper Noel Conaty, who was standing 65m from his goalmouth as the player nearest to the Lough Lene Gaels uprights.
Micheal Daly sent the ball towards the Raharney goalmouth, where Thomas Doyle swung his Hurley at the dropping ball, which ended in the Raharney net, to end this contest in a most dramatic of dramatic finales, leaving Lough Lene Gaels match winners by a margin of one point.
