Village Barn Senior LGF Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 6-8 St Joseph’s Ladies Football Club 3-6.
Mullingar Shamrocks LGF senior team returned to the winner’s enclosure for the first time in the 2024 version of the Village Barn Westmeath Ladies Gaa Senior Football Championship thanks to a spectacular first half display on Thursday evening in Streamstown.
St Joseph’s led briefly when Sinead Robbins pointed in the opening minutes but Shamrocks responded quickly and from the restart a move began that ended with Karen Hegarty putting the ball in the St Joseph’s net. Sinead Robbins again pointed and when a simple Anna Jones free rebounded off the post Chloe Smullen was the first to react and with one of her drop-kick specials off the left foot basted the ball to the net for Shamrocks’ second goal. Shamrocks non-stop attacks, great defending led by Tara Fagan and combination play piled on the pressure with Anna Jones and Rachel Cheevers dominating the mid-field exchanges several scoring opportunities were created.
Anna Jones scored a great long range point from play; Chloe Smullen was unstoppable and cut through for her second goal; a great individual effort produced another point for Anna Jones; Grace Daly added another point to the Shamrocks’ tally; Chloe Smullen turned creator for her neighbour Karen Hegarty who finished to the net for Shamrocks fourth goal; a great save by St Joseph’s goalkeeper Emer Killian prevented Chloe Smullen’s hat-trick but Chloe Swarbrigg was on hand to finish the rebound to extend Shamrocks lead to 5-3 to 0-3. An interception gifted St Joseph’s a goal scoring opportunity and Síle Kearney made no mistake shooting past Katie Kelly who proved to be a very capable replacement for the departed Lauren McCormack.
The second half was not as impressive and at one stage the St Joseph’s players, who never stopped trying, had reduced the lead to just 0-6. A long range St Joseph’s free into a crowded goalmouth ended in the net but points from Anna Jones (a free from an acute angle), Chloe Smullen (thanks to the combined play of Anna and Grace Daly) and a free from down-town by Anna restored the lead to its half-time dimension before St Joseph’s enjoyed their best period of the game as they outscored Shamrock 1-3 to 0-0. A restart malfunction provided Caoilin Elliffe with the third St Joseph’s goal and this was followed by points from Aoife Keegan, Caoilin Elliffe and Joyce Conway and reduced the lead to just 0-6.
However, a goal and a point from Anna Jones and one point from Holly McCormack secured the victory on a 6-8 to 3-6 scoreline with which was a fine Mullingar Shamrocks team display boosted by a number of great individual performances.

GFM&O in Killucan
Our G4M&O ladies took on Killucan G4M&O team earlier this week in a fast flowing game on a fine sunny evening.
Both sides demonstrated great passages of play and lots of fine scores. Many thanks to Killucan for hosting us and for the refreshments afterwards. The G4M&O ladies were delighted to learn recently that they have been accepted to participate in the National Blitz in Dublin in early September. Training continues under Niall’s guidance on Tuesday evenings at 8.00 pm. We look forward to hosting Shandonagh next week in Springfield.
