Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

Senior Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-7 Moate All-Whites 1-4

It was mission accomplished in Rochfortbridge as Mullingar Shamrocks secured the victory that was essential to keep alive the possibility of reaching the knock-out stages of the championship.

Shamrocks opened their scoring with two pointed frees by Denis Corroon. The direct running of Paddy Fagan was instrumental in the creation of the frees. Conor Bracken responded with a point form play for Moate before points from Jordan Warde, Paddy Fagan and Brian Guerin extended Shamrocks lead to 0-5 to 0-1. Two Moate points before the interval by Eoghan Curran and Robbie Forde reduced the deficit and it took a great goal line clearance by Brendan O’Reilly to secure an interval lead of 0-5 to 0-3.

Robbie Forde pointed early in the second half and this was followed by a Ronan Murray goal to secure a 1-4 to 0-5 lead for the All-Whites. However this was to be the last score of the evening for the south Westmeath boys. Denis Corroon added another pointed free to the Shamrocks tally. A great turnover by Conor O’Brien (one of many on the night) who combined with Denis Corroon and Paddy Fagan to split the Moate defence and Paddy was the one who crashed the ball home. Jordan Warde was unlucky to have his goal ruled out for a square ball infringement before Denis Corroon added another pointed free before the final whistle with Shamrocks leading by 1-7 to 1-4.

Next up is Killucan. There is no room for relaxation. This is now a must win game for Shamrocks (Killucan scored 2-20 tonight) and a must not lose game for Killucan. Jeopardy will be around Cusack Park again in two weeks’ time.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Eoin Doran; Marc Eivers, David Gavin, Dillon Matthews; Davy Coyne (Conn O’Hanlon), Matt O’Shea, Brendan O’Reilly; Conor O’Brien and Shane Ormsby; Brian Guerin (0-1), Patrick Fagan (1-1), John O’Reilly; Dean Moore, Denis Corroon (0-4), Jordan Warde (0-1) [Killian Daly].

Junior 1 Football Championship: St Loman’s 2-12 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-12.

At half-time, Shamrocks trailed by a single point (0-6 to 0-5) after being generally outplayed. St Loman’s began the scoring with points from Chris Gilbert and Shane Mulderry but like scores from Trevor Keena and Niall Hannigan tied the ball game. A couple of pointed frees and one each from play by Tristan Graham and Danny McCann extended the St Loman’s lead to four points (0-6 to 0-2). A great Philly Shaw save from McCann kept Shamrocks in the game and three quick points by Conor Fagan, Trevor Keena and Nathan Smyth made it all to play for in the second half.

The damage limitation exercise of the minutes before the interval were undone immediately on the restart when St Loman’s broke from the throw-in and Mark Tunney goaled. From the restart, great work from Matthew Siode created a goal scoring opportunity but Rory Mathews saved from Nathan Smyth and Matthew Siode’s follow up effort was also scrambled clear. Two points from Ross Corroon kept us in touch; Danny McCann and Conor Fagan exchanged points, Conor’s point a superb effort from close to the river bank. Shane Mulderry pointed before Cilian Plunkett finished for St Loman’s second goal. This effectively ended the game as a contest. Ross Corroon with four points rounded off our scoring including one great strike from the riverbank. St Loman’s were comfortable 2-12 to 0-12 winners.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Philly Shaw; Eamonn Breslin, Conor Fitzpatrick, Matthew Siode; Dónal Lane, Pearse Corroon, Ciaran Kiernan, [MIcheál Curley]; Dónal O’Donoghue [Andrew Shaw], Ryan Blundell; Ross Corroon (0-6) Alan Cashman [Nathan Cornally], Niall Hannigan (0-1) Trevor Keena (0-2) [Gary Corroon], Nathan Smyth (0-1)[Eddie Moore] Conor Fagan (0-2).

Minor Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-16 Killucan 2-6.

Last year Mullingar Shamrocks struggled to defeat Killucan, on this occasion goals from Gavin Pierce (2-0), Ronan Byrne, Tom Daly and Conor Heffernan set up a comfortable victory. It was noteworthy that Criostóir Ormsby made a comeback from a long-term injury.

Under-14 Football Championship: Lilliput Gaels 1-12 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-10.

The small crowd in Ballinagore on Wednesday evening were treated to a fantastic exhibition of all that’s good about Gaelic football when Lilliput Gaels faced Mullingar Shamrocks in round two of the under 14 football championship. In the end the visitors prevailed but in truth no one would have complained had the sides finished all square. There were some terrific duels all over the field with Colm Clinton and Darren Corcoran vying for midfield supremacy, Theo Kelly battling with Jack Favier, Oliver Keane engaging in a tremendous contest with Daniel Masterson, Donnacha Mangan competing ferociously with Manus Kelly and Billy Whelan doing his utmost to get the better of his duels with a number of Shamrocks’ attackers.

The teams traded scores throughout the first half and Tom McCaul’s heroics between the posts ensured that the home side only led by Darren Corcoran’s first half goal. The efforts of Conor Glynn, Cian Traynor, Killian Hand, Fionn Ledwith, MJ Burke, Carl Keane and Darragh Daly were noteworthy and Marius Budividavicius early goal in the second moiety ensured parity but a draw seemed likely until Colm Clinton’s bullet like shot in the 55th minute gave the green and whites breathing space.

Lilliput continued to exert scoreboard pressure and Shamrocks’ substitutes Sam Phillips and Eddie Leavy made significant contributions on the scoreboard before Mick Gordon’s final whistle signalled a narrow Mullingar Shamrocks win on an evening where every player played his part in a captivating contest.

The Mullingar Shamrocks’ squad was: Tom McCaul, Cian Traynor, Carl Keane, MJ Burke, Conor Glynn, Shay Leavy, Manus Kelly, Colm Clinton, Killian Hand, Conan Kelly, Harry McLoughlin, Sam Phillips, Theo Kelly, Ruairi Thornton, Eddie Leavy, Fionn Ledwith, Marius Budividavicius, Dylan Hanly, Conor Matthews, Darragh Daly, Majus Virketis, Kian Newcombe, Cian McNamee, Oliver Keane, Evan Nohilly,
