Under-12 Finals Day in TEG Cusack Park

Last weekend was special for the young  footballers of the county as the Under-12 League Finals Days were staged in TEG Cusack Park on Saturday and Monday.

Over 800 footballers, many of them stars of the future, were given the opportunity of playing on the same pitch as the present day stars of Westmeath and Galway performed on Sunday.

This was a wonderful initiative of the Westmeath Coiste na nÓg and we congratulate Barry Kelly, Peter Collins, Pat Collins and the committee members for their initiative in bringing the Under-12 leagues to such a memorable conclusion for the young footballers of the county. Peter Collins was the man with the plan and he deserves to be complimented on a fine bit of imaginative thinking.  The gift of a football was waiting for each participant when he returned to the dressing room. This weekend it was the hurlers turn. The future might yet be bright.

A total of 41 players togged out over the two evenings to represent Mullingar Shamrocks. It was their first time playing for Mullingar Shamrocks in Cusack Park – hopefully the first of many occasions there.  We played Coralstown-Kinnegad on Saturday evening and Millmore Gaels on Monday when Seaghán Óg Collins emerged as the 4 goal hero and he may even have go the final touch to a fifth goal. A nice way to mark your club debut in the TEG Cusack Park.

New York in Springfield

It was our pleasure to host the New York GAA  senior football team in Springfield on Friday afternoon as they staged a light training session to recover from the trans-Atlantic flight as they prepared for their Tailteann Cup quarterfinal v Laois in Portlaoise on Sunday in which they were very unlucky to lose by four points..  Refreshments were provided after the session with ex-Tubberclair clubman, Jeff Farrell, Chairperson of the Westmeath New York Hurling and Football Club, one of the men in charge.  Israel Illunga, the former Westmeath and Rosemount footballer was also part of the panel and made a return visit to Springfield.

It was a real multi-national occasion as Spanish students on a school tour were very interested and very cold observers of the session.

Our former player, Killian Butler presented the club with a signed New York jersey that will provide a novel addition to the memorabilia on The Clubhouse wall.

Ivan’s Return to Springfield …

Mullingar Shamrocks were delighted to welcome Ivan O’Connor back to Springfield last weekend and several of his old friends from the Glory Days were on hand to greet the man who lined out for Shamrocks for the duration of his football career. Our own Dunmore native was one of those present to welcome his fellow parishioners to town.

Ivan was part of the management team of the Dunmore MacHales GAA minor football team that played Mullingar Shamrocks in a challenge match. And, would you believe Ivan was the stats man for the team and those of a certain vintage will remember that Ivan’s dad, Mick (‘Micko’) pioneered statistical gathering back in the day. It’s a fascination that’s obviously in the O’Connor genes.

Ivan is unique in the history of Mullingar Shamrocks club for his almost complete county medal collection that includes Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Minor medals. Ivan’s adult medals include Under-21, Intermediate, Senior ‘B’, Junior ‘B’ and the collection is topped off with 5 Senior medals.

Ivan has sent his thanks and appreciation for the welcome and hospitality shown to the Dunmore MacHales travelling party on Sunday.
