Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

May 27, 2024

MJS Building and Development Div. 1 Minor League Final: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-10 Tubberclair 3-5.

The recent rivalry between the young players of Shamrocks and Tubberclair had its latest enthralling edition in Springfield on Sunday evening last in the minor league Division 1 final. These two sets of players first faced each other three years ago in Ballynacargy in the under 15 final when Daire O’ Connor’s late wondrous goal won the day for Tubberclair and matches between the teams have always been fiercely contested.

Sunday evening was no different in front of a large crowd with Tubberclair emerging victorious courtesy of team captain Paul Keegan’s late goal. Tubberclair began well with Daire O’ Connor’s early goal but the home side settled aided by impressive performances by Paul Keating, Donnacha Maguire, James Flynn, and Ty Masterson and a superb save by Adam Buckley. A well taken goal from Conor Heffernan levelled matters and in the 21st minute came arguably the turning point of the contest when Tubberclair corner back Daire Burke showed remarkable dexterity to twice keep out Ryan Kelly’s goal bound effort after a flowing Shamrocks’ move.

Mullingar Shamrocks would have felt happier going in to the second moiety on level terms with the breeze now in their favour. Fine points from Gavin Pierce, Donnacha Maguire and Ryan Kelly seemed to validate this view and Shamrocks were keeping possession well but Keelin Connell’s goal restored parity, every ball was contested with great fervour as the match entered its final stages and when Alex Sheerin curled over an impressive left footed point in the fifty ninth minute, Shamrocks seemed set for victory.

A wise spectator was overheard saying “a two point lead is a dangerous lead,” and it proved prophetic when Paul Keegan showed awareness and a cool head to fire low past Adam Buckley for the winning score.

And, it might not be the worst thing that happened

Credit to referee Enda Kenny who brought a full set of officials and refereed a potentially difficult match in a calm but fair manner.

The end of the school year means awards are presented to those who have excelled during the academic year. We congratulate Callum Rigney Clyne and Sophie Russell on their Sportspersons of the Year Award for Mullingar Community College.

We understand that Sophie has the boots ready for the big comeback when the Leaving Cert exams are over and out.

ACL Div.5: Ballinagore 2-14  Mullingar Shamrocks 1-9

Another second half fadeout was partly responsible for the latest defeat in the ACLDiv.5 but in fairness Ballinagore were the stronger team. Shamrocks enjoyed a first-half lead of 1-6 to 1-5 but faded in the second half. The highlight from the Shamrocks perspective was wing-back Tadhg Sherdian’s great goal.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Liam English; Eamonn Breslin, Conor Fitzpatrick, Adam Boyle; Dyla Franzoni, Matthew Siode, Tadhg Sheridan (1-0); Donal O’Donoghue, Ross Corroon (0-4); Niall Hannigan (0-1), Gary Corroon (0-4), NathanSmith;  Luke McCabe, Conor Fagan, Andrew Shaw. Replacements: Seán Hynes, Daragh Hughes, Ciarán Looby.

Blitz in Ballymore

Well done to our Under-8 and Under-10 girls who took part in the blitz in Ballymore this morning. Great teamwork and tackling on show today from the girls. Big thanks to hosts Ballymore and to coaches Sophie, Karen, Emma, Linda, Kevin and Declan.

G4M&O in training

Our G4M&O women are preparing for the North Leinster Blitz which will be held in the Erin's Isle Club in Finglas on June 8th.

The group is a wonderful representation of the Where We All Belong concept of the GAA as last Tuesday evenings training session included players from Spain, Latvia, the USA and even Kerry. Integration at its finest.

New members are always welcome to the group where the emphasis is on fun, fitness and healthy exercise (not sure where the post-training chocolate cake fits in to this though?). No previous Gaelic football experience necessary.

It is appropriate to recall the words of Jarlath Burns, President of the GAA at our recent Gathering "let us not forget the invaluable contribution of our G4M&O section, a testament to the inclusive nature of your club and the power of community".

As usual Jarlath was absolutely correct.
