Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

August 29, 2022

Fairgreen Shopping Centre Ladies Gaelic Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-7 The Downs 0-13.

Although both teams were already safely through to the knock-out stages of the championship, the security did not prevent the teams from providing an absorbing contest in Springfield on Thursday evening.

The Downs began strongly and registered four points before the ever-dangerous Emma Morris scythed through The Downs defence and pointed for Shamrocks. At this stage Lucy Power , Holly (0-2) and Megan Dowdall had points on the board for The Downs. Beth McGuire added a point before Emma Morris began a move that was continued by Holly McCormack whose pass released Karen Hegarty who shot to the net from a tight angle. Lucy Power pointed but an Emma Morris pointed free and a great individual point from Karen Hegarty levelled the match (1-3 to 0-6). Two points from Beth McGuire secured an interval lead for the visitors.

Holly Dowdall and Beth McGuire pointed after the interval to extend the lead but a great Holly McCormack goal inspired a Shamrocks recovery. Melek Fagan contributed handsomely to this score with Emma Morris providing the pass that sent Holly through on goal.  Karen Hegarty added a point almost immediately and the sides were level. An Emma Morris pointed frees in the fifteenth minute secured a Shamrocks lead for the first time. Susanna Buckley added to the  lead with a wonderful team point that involved several players and began when Lauren McCormack fielded high from a free awarded to the The Downs following a brilliant piece of defending (2-6 to 0-10). Points by Sheila McGrath and B McNamee levelled the match once again before a second McGrath point sent The Downs into the lead. A great pointed free from Emma Morris equalised and Emma was unlucky with the final shot of the evening when her long range free dropped just short before  Mick Gordon blew the final whistle with the sides level at 2-7 to 0-13.

The foundation for this fine result by an understrength Shamrocks team was laid in defence where Lauren McCormack was in superb from in goal and her contribution included a great penalty stop in the first half and a superb second half save at a crucial stage of the game. The way Lauren dealt with the routine business of goalkeeping provided great assurance for a defence in which the Fagan cousins, the Spellman sisters, Annemarie O’Reilly and Jenna Kelly were outstanding and were well supported by the  work rate of midfielders Laura Whitelaw and Máiread Newman. The forwards were led superbly by Emma Morris and Karen Hegarty with Michela O’Connor, Susanna Buckley, Holly McCormack, Mia Gilligan and Jasmin Haugh always prominent. And when Karen Hegarty was forced through illness to leave the pitch for some minutes she was replaced by the very promising Jagoda Bartosiewicz who made her senior championship debut for Mullingar Shamrocks.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Lauren McCormack, Melek Fagan, Niamh Spellman, Annemarie O’Reilly, Cliodhna Spellman Tara Fagan, Jenna Kelly;  Mairead Newman, Laura Whitelaw; Michaela O’Connor, Emma Morris (0-4), Susanna Buckley (0-1),  Mia Gilligan, Karen Hegarty (1-2) [Jagoda Bartosiewicz], Holly McCormack (1-0).

Fógra: Best wishes to Sophie Hegarty, one of the great workers on behalf of the club and a member of our senior team who is the latest player to suffer the dreaded cruciate knee injury. The unfairness of it all.

LGF Minor Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 5:10 Tyrrellspass 1:08

Congratulations to our minor ladies on a brilliant display of football on Tuesday evening in Tyrrellspass.   All players played with skill and speed and settled into game quickly.  First half was a display of great defensive play by our back line who prevented many attempts on goal.  The team played as a close unit and their fluid passing and support meant they maintained possession for large parts of the first half. This teamwork was reflected in the half time scoreline of 3-4 to 0-5.

Second half started with a Shamrocks goal in the first few minutes.  Tyrrellspass came back with a goal and a point shortly afterwards. Our midfielders and forward lines made the most of accurate kick outs from goal and moved ball quickly and kept adding to scoreboard despite lots of good defensive play by opposition.

Mullingar Shamrocks:Tamara Molloy, Rosie O'Grady,  Erin Murray,  Eve Byrne, Linda Raeside, Annemarie O’Reilly(1-0), Phoebe Cadwalader, Zara Corroon(0-1), Sophie Russell (1-0), Jasmine Haugh (2-2), Ellie O'Sullivan(1-3), Sinead Sweeney, Áine Creagh(0-1), Jagoda Bartosiewicz (0-1), Mia Gilligan(0-2):

Under-19 -Football championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 6-9 Lilliput Gaels 1-17.

The Gaelic football equivalent of driving for show and putting for dough was certainly in evidence on Wednesday evening last in Ballinagore when Shamrocks played Lilliput Gaels in this high scoring under 19 championship classic. The driving element applied to the home side as they kicked a series of superb points throughout with Shane Corcoran (son of former Malachy’s stalwart Paddy) particularly prominent. The Corcoran name has long been synonymous with football in the Castletown area and the latest generation shows signs of continuing the tradition.

The putting element however crucially applied to Shamrocks with Daithí O Mairtín, Oliver MacNamara and Shane Ormsby terrorising the hosts defence and ultimately this ability to score goals proved crucial. It was far from a three man show for Vinny Timoney’s charges as Ciaran Kiernan, the Hickey brothers, Ben Egan and Daithi O Mairtin amongst others played vital roles in an entertaining match. Another key element was the display of netminder Mikey Curley who made splendid saves and launched accurate kickouts throughout.

The managerial acumen of Messrs Timoney, Cashman and Gavin must be acknowledged and Vinny is showing signs of being a front runner to succeed Kevin McStay in 2026.

This competition has been vital for these young players at this stage of their development and the players showed an appetite for work and a team spirit that can only be admired. The outcome  was in doubt up to the closing stages when substitute James Devine pounced for the victors’ final goal. The team was as follows: Mikey Curley; Enda Keating , Ben Egan, Rian Adamson (Sheridan), Ruari Hickey, Aaron Russell (0-1), Tom Hickey;  Tomass Turks;  Ciaran Kiernan;

Adam Boyle (Darragh Hughes) , Daithí Martin (2-0), Luke McCabe (0-1)[Caoilinn Walshe, 0-1]; Mark Shaw,  Oliver McNamara (1-5), Shane Ormsby (2-0)

Garrycastle Under-12 Tournament: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-10 Cill Óige 2-5

Shamrocks travelled to the immaculate Castledaly grounds on Thursday evening last to face Cill Oige in the opening round of the Garrycastle tournament. Micheal Burke and Emerson Farrelly’s charges produced a fine performance against a well drilled home side to emerge victorious on a 5-10 to 2-5 scoreline. Shamrocks had 18 players in attendance and each player contributed to a good display. Conor Matthews was solid between the posts and distributed the kickouts well, Conor Glynn and the ultra-consistent Killian Hand were tigerish at corner back while Carl Keane was superb at No. 3. Theo Kelly was alert alongside his brother Manus in the half back line alongside the very reliable MJ Burke. Shay Leavy and Scott Farrelly competed very well against a strong Cill Óige duo. In attack, Colm Clinton was top scorer with a couple of well taken goals and Oliver Keane, the accurate Darragh Daly and two hard working wing forwards in Fionn Ledwith and Jamie Timoney made life difficult for the Cill Óige defence. Sam Philips and Eddie Leavy were lively in attack and Noah Smyth and Conan Kelly worked tirelessly when introduced. The next game is a home fixture on Friday 2nd Sept versus Lilliput Gaels while the majority of this side also face Tubberclair away in the under 13 division 4 quarter final next Wednesday.

The squad on duty was as follows: Conor Matthews, Conor Glynn, Carl Keane, Conan Kelly, Colm Clinton, MJ Burke, Killian Hand, Eddie Leavy, Manus Kelly, Shay Leavy, Darragh Daly, Noah Smyth, Jamie Timoney, Fionn Ledwith, Scott Farrelly, Theo Kelly, Sam Phillips and Oliver Keane.

Shay Murtagh Precast Senior Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-14 Caulry 1-14.

Another great performance in what the final match of the season for our senior footballers but when we think that it will be eleven months before we (and several other clubs) play another senior championship game, it seems that the split-season calendar might require some repair work going forward.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Philly Shaw; Ryan Blundell, Efe Siode, Marc Eivers (Micheál Curley); John O’Reilly, Conn O’Hanlon (Aaron Purcell) Dillon Matthews (0-1); Denis Corroon (0-6), Brian Farrell; Killian Daly (0-1), Ross Corroon (0-2) [Paddy Joyce]. Alan Cashman (0-1) {Eddie Moore]; Oliver MacNamara, Paddy Fagan (0-2), and Jordan Warde (1-1) [Micheál Curley].
