Under 15 Division 1 League final: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-17 St. Loman’s 3-9

Shamrocks’ under 15s finished their league campaign on Tuesday last with a narrow win over neighbours St. Loman’s after a gripping final played in tremendous spirit by two fine teams.

Conor Lisbon’s two first half goals and a fine save by Graham Duggan were key factors in the visitors leading by six points at the break, 2-6 to 0-6 and a superb goal by the talented Jack McCann early in the second half seemed likely to signal a victory for his side. However, the home side showed considerable spirit and no little skill to notch five unanswered points with Ty Masterson, Criostóir Ormsby and Ronan Byrne prominent and Ben McNamee’s opportunistic goal with ten minutes remaining levelled the match. The game could have gone either way with both sides spurning opportunities before Rory McCaul and Padraig Casey’s accuracy ensured a Shamrocks’ win on a 1-17 to 3-9 scoreline.

Every player could feel proud of his efforts in a high-quality encounter that provided great entertainment for the good sized attendance. The attention now turns to the championship which is due to start in a few weeks.

The Shamrocks’ panel was as follows: James Ryan, Brian Wycherley, Tommy Idowu, Ben Sheerin, Andrew Gavigan, Aindreis Opala, Ty Masterson, Ted Aherne, Padraig Casey, Ruairi Kilmartin, Jack Toal, Adam Buckley, Tommy Daly, James Davitt, Paul Keating, Charlie Foy, Zac Coyne, Isaac Haughey, Criostóir Ormsby, Ben McNamee, Ronan Byrne, Gareth Sweeney, Rory McCaul, Declan Newman, James Flynn, Padraig Casey and Liam Heffernan.

Under-14 Girls LGF League: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-11 Shandonagh 3-3

Eighteen girls arrived at Shandonagh hopeful for the win and they didn't disappoint. The match was full of competition. A special mention is reserved for our goalkeeper Emily Ford who made some spectacular saves during the match. Caoimhe Farrell was amazing in midfield, both attacking and defending whenever needed. Naima Whelan and Roisin Nohilly made it very difficult for the Shandonagh forwards with their tireless working.

Several scoring opportunities were taken by the relentless forwards that left the score line at 5-11 to 3-3 in favour of Shamrocks at the final whistle.

Mullingar Shamrocks Under-13 Whites complete their league campaign in Delvin

Mullingar Shamrocks’ whites travelled to Delvin on Wednesday evening last to face the home side in their final league game and, on a horrendous night weather wise, emerged victorious.

Shamrocks had twenty players on duty and each played their part in an impressive team display. Conor Matthews proved a very able deputy for Tom McCaul between the posts and Killian Hand, MJ Burke, the ultra consistent Cian Treanor and Christian Conway were reliable and disciplined in defence. Shay Leavy’s excellent form continued at midfield and he added some good scores to his efforts while Scott Farrelly covered every blade of grass in another fine display at midfield. Colm Clinton led the attack in style with Evan Nohilly, Darragh Daly and Fionn Ledwith also to the fore.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Conor Matthews, Cian Treanor, Theo Kelly, Killian Hand, Darragh McCabe, MJ Burke, Manus Kelly, Shay Leavy, Christian Conway, Scott Farrelly, Darragh Daly, Evan Nohilly, Conan Kelly, Colm Clinton, Sam Phillips, Fionn Ledwith, Alfie Rock, Jamie Murtagh, Oliver Keane. Thanks to Hughie Nolan for refereeing.

Congrats Enda …

St. Finian’s won the All Ireland German debating competition for the third time in the past six years on Thursday afternoon in DCU when they defeated Templeogue College in the final. A notable feature was that Shamrocks’ under-19 player Enda Keating was on the winning team and was named best speaker on the day, equivalent to a man of the match award!!!

Under-8 and Under-10 LGFA Blitz

Mullingar Shamrocks hosted a Westmeath LGFA Under-8 and Under-10 Blitz on Saturday afternoon in Springfield. We had teams from Ballymore, Ballynacargy, Milltown, St Joseph’s and Kilbeggan Shamrocks. Well done to all the girls who showed great skills and teamwork in all their games.  Thank you to the coaches and supporters who cheered on the girls.  Thank you to our referees on the day Brian, Niamh, Susanna and Cliodhna who did a fantastic job and a big thank you to the coaches who helped set up and organise the blitz-Kevin, David, Tom, Karen, Sophie, Roisin, Casey, Niamh and Laura!

Congratulations to Kian Newcombe ...

We have had a lot of talented members in the club over the years that have gone on to have successful careers in the world of sport and entertainment. Young Kian Newcombe, an underage member, has achieved a first. Kian recently auditioned against all the best ballet dancers in the country and has been offered a place with the Irish National Youth Ballet Company.

As well as attending underage football training sessions and playing Gaelic football Kian has been attending dance lessons with Anne Marie Bentick and Leanne in Energy Plus over the years.

There will be a lot more Saturdays spent in Dublin but Kian intends to keep plying his Gaelic football.

The best of luck, Kian.

The Late Michael (Mick) Clarke …

The sad news reached Mullingar during the week of the death in Melbourne of Mick Clarke.

Mick was an outstanding Mullingar Shamrocks footballer in the late 1970s to the mid-1980s and is remembered by Ritchie O’Donoghue ‘as one who gave me great encouragement when he came back to Mullingar during the summer of 1986’. Mick was a substitute on the team that won the 1986 senior title and played in the 1979 county final when Shamrocks were defeated by Athlone. He represented Westmeath at all levels and played in the Leinster senior championship in 1982 and 1983 with the county. . A free spirit who loved to travel, football was just one of many Mick’s many interests. He also loved the college life and was a member of the UCG team that won the Sigerson Cup in 1980,1981 and 1983  and he also played in the 1978 and 1982 finals. Mick was the outstanding player for UCG in the 1980 victory over a UCD team that included Meath’s Colm O’Rourke and Gerry McEntee at midfield.

Mick Clarke was also a key player in the Mullingar Shamrocks team that broke a long trophy -less sequence at senior level in 1982 when Mullingar Shamrocks defeated Moate All-Whites on an 0-12 to 0-7 scoreline 10 July 1983 in Cusack Park to win the ACL League title. That particular team lined out as follows: Denis Larkin; Patsy Fagan, Joe Brady, Mick Conlon; Peter Ledwith, Michael Fagan (Captain), John Corroon (Dominic Flynn); Seán Murphy (0-3), Gerry Nohilly; Denis Shields (0-1), Noel Dempsey, 0-1), Denis Corroon, Brendan Conlon; Mick Greene (0-4), Michael Clarke (0-1), Seán Hynes (0-2).

We send our sympathies to the members of the Clarke family.
