ACFL Div 4

Ballinagore 5-13  Athlone 1-09

We ended our league campaign with a good win over visiting Athlone on Sunday morning. Conditions were the same as we'd got used to over the last week - blistering hot - and both sides are to be commended for serving up an entertaining contest. The opening quarter was fairly evenly contested as both sides settled and we held a 1-03 to 0-03 lead at the water break. However we started to get a grip on proceedings in the second quarter and when Cody Finnane rose high to punch home our second goal we headed into the half time break with a decent lead, 2-07 to 0-05, but we still had the face the breeze in the second half. We had a dream start to the second half as Darragh Seery fired home our third goal in a move straight from the throw in. Paddy Ennis scored another three pointer in a well worked move involving Peter Reynolds and we held a commanding 4-08 to 0-07 lead at the second water break. Darragh Seery scored his second goal of the day with a good assist from Frankie Deegan who then scored two nice points from play himself. To their credit, Athlone continued to press hard and they were rewarded with a well taken goal. Points from Niall Kelly, Cody Finnane and corner back Enda Claffey concluded our scoring in what turned into a comfortable win. This was a decent performance by our lads as we enter our final preparations for our championship opener against Bunbrosna in a fortnights time. Our "young guns" stepped up again and they have been a huge addition to our panel this year in terms of the energy and no little skill they bring to proceedings. Ian Seery in the goals was solid again especially under the dropping ball. Our backs seldom get mentions but they performed well on Sunday, our full back line in particular getting to grips with a handy Athlone full forward line. Niall Kelly at midfield covered every inch of grass in a tireless performance and was rewarded with two well taken scores, while up front the experience of James Sheerin and Darren Rigney stood out. Keep up the good work lads, the Bun game is just around the corner now. Team: Ian Seery, Enda Claffey, Peter Deegan, Finian Heeney, Conan Feery, David Keegan, Luke Seery, Niall Kelly, Darragh Seery, Cathal Kelly, James Sheerin, Peter Reynolds, Darren Rigney, Cody Finnane, Paddy Ennis. Subs used: David Slevin, Frankie Deegan.
