Crookedwood GAA Notes

Junior Championship

We travelled to Cullion on Tuesday evening last to take on the home team in round 3 of the junior championship. On what was a very hot evening for hurling, we emerged victorious to keep our interest in this competition alive. Even though we were completely in control in the first quarter, scores were hard to come by, as we struggled to find our radar, and hoped that the mounting wide tally wouldn’t come back to haunt us. However, in the second quarter our dominance yielded scores and we went in at half-time, 1-8 to 1-1 ahead. Cullion came at us hard in the third quarter, but we held firm and were eight points up at the water break. As the lads tired in the final quarter, the home team outscored us by 1-3 to 0-3, with a consolation goal coming in injury time. Final score; Crookedwood 1-17 Cullion 2-9. Well done to both teams for their efforts in the very warm conditions. Team: A.Mitchell, C.Yourell, G.Brennan, J.Butler, Cathal Bawle, J.Kiernan, D.Hyland, Ciaran Bawle (0-2), B.McCarthy (0-7), C.Savage (1-3), O.Boyle, S.McCarthy (0-3), C.McGovern, E.Murray (0-2), S.Darby. Subs:  N.Kiernan for McGovern, R.Burge for Darby.

Division 1 League

Crookedwood 3-11 Castlepollard 1-19. We concluded our league campaign with a worthwhile run out against Castlepollard recently. Castlepollard started the brighter and went into an early lead as our lads struggled to settle. However, as the game progressed, we grew into the game and played some good hurling. The game ebbed and flowed and there was never much between the sides at any stage, but ultimately the greater experience saw Pollard emerged victorious. Team: Adam Mitchell, John Kiernan, Damien Grifferty, Adam Bate, Cathal Bawle, Feichin Og Brennan, D.Hyland, Eddie Nally, Ronan Scally, Conor Savage, Shane McGovern (0-2), Simon McCarthy (0-1), Barry O’Mara (1-5), Brian McLoughlin (0-1), Noel Yourell (2-1). Subs used; Ger Brennan (0-1), Enda Murray, Oisín Boyle

Joe McDonagh Champions

History was made in Croke Park as our Senior hurlers won our first ever Joe McDonagh cup. This was a great team performance as we totally outclassed Kerry and won easy enough in the end. Well done to all involved.

Division 1 relegation playoff

After the highs of winning the Joe McDonagh seven days previously had not faded away, the hurlers took on Laois in the league playoff to decide our status for 2022. After another great battling performance, the lads left Portlaoise relegated to Division 2, beaten 1-27 to 0-27.

Westmeath Camogie

Westmeath recently won the U-16 “C “ All Ireland Championship. There was three Crookedwood girls on the victorious panel, namely Aine McKenna, Sarah Downes and Ava Maleady. Well done to all involved.
