Junior Football championship 2021:

Draft plans were received for this coming years championship during the week and assuming that clubs approve the plan next week at county level, then St Josephs will be in Section 2 with Ballycomoyle,St Pauls,CFCW,Mullingar Shamrocks(B) and the winners from the Junior 2 championship from 2020 which has yet to be completed. The timescale is for July 2021 so it is quite a bit out yet. All will be dependent on how the Covid 19 situation pans out and that is anyones guess at this stage.

Looking Back to 1999!

With little activity at the moment, it is nice to look back at some of the previous years and this week, we look at 1999 briefly. With an influx of young players from the successful Under 16 championship side of 1998 and from some good underage teams of the previous years, St Josephs were one of the up and coming teams at the time. The championship started with a narrow 0-11 to 0-10 win over Bunbrosna who were in the final in 1998 which set us up nicely for the second round where we came out 2-12 to 0-6 winners over Loughnavalley. Things got better in the next round when we had a hugely impressive 3-14 to 1-6 win over Ballycomoyle and with the top team qualifying directly for the final, things were looking good. St Pauls were next up and we did everything right in this game at The Downs except win. Leading by 0-10 to 0-6 with just minutes left, we conceded 1-2 late on to lose by 1-8 to 0-10. Routine wins over Delvin and St Fintans/Multyfarnham left us second in the table and facing Ballycomoyle in the semi final. This game was far different from the group match and never was there any more than a point or two between the teams. At the end, we lost out by 1-6 to 0-8 at Cusack Park. We did reach our first ever Junior Cup final later in the year remarkably without having to kick a ball to get there. We received walk overs from St Pauls and St fintans/Multyfarnham before facing Bunbrosna on 18th December 1999. We led by 0-6 to 0-3 before conceding two goals prior to half time and a third Bun goal late on in the game saw us lose out by 3-7 to 0-9.  We did have success in the All County League winning Division 5 which was a first ever title for the club at adult level. For the record the panel on duty for the championship semi final was as follows; Kevin Killian,Justin Mc Donnell,Anselm Conlon,Fergus Mc Cormack,Pat Conway,Darren Pettit,Darren Mc Cormack,Gerry Egan,Aidan Elliffe,Noel Watts,Declan Mc Cormack,Martin Looram,Kieran Keegan,Padraig Seery,Michael Kelly,Michael Lynam,David Slevin,Billy Kelly,Andrew Mc Cormack,Brendan Slevin,Andrew Meares,Ronan Mc Donnell,Aidan Lennon,Daire Lynam,James Mc Cormack,Pat Mc Cormack,Sean Lynam,Brian Maxwell,Declan Fitzgerald.
