Ballinagore club notes

February 25, 2019

This weekend was the busiest one yet in 2019 for our club. We had senior and juvenile football games, our thanks to Ballymore for travelling up to play our junior side in a challenge on Saturday afternoon, senior scor county finals and our annual townland league finals so there was no rest for the wicked and it's a sure sign that the season is upon us!

Senior Scór Champions

A wonderful nights entertainment was had in The Downs at last Saturday evenings Senior Scór Finals. Ballinagore had competitors in solo singing (Shane Heraty), recitation (Pius Kirby), Leiriu stage performance (Kevin Kennedy , Kevin Deegan, JJ Hussey, Derinn Doody, Aisling King, Bridget O’Brien, Martin Furey, Pauline Keegan) and set dancing (Aisling Heraty, Cathy Ennis, Bridget O’Brien, Eileen Roche, Finian O’Brien, Enda O’Brien, Oliver Reynolds, Shane Heraty). The standard across all competitions was very high and all our performers were brilliant on the evening. When the results were announced, Ballinagore were crowned county champions in the Leiriu stage performance, a result that went down very well with everyone present but particularly well with the large turnout of support from Ballinagore. Well done to everyone for all the effort and hard work you have put in over the last number of weeks to ensure our club continues its strong and proud tradition in Scór. We now have another Leinster final in the Wexford Opera House to look forward to on March 10th.

Senior Scór Table Quiz

Our table quiz team finished in 3rd place in the county final which took place in The Greville Arms last Thursday evening. Well done Gerry Claffey, Finian Heeney, Oliver Reynolds and Shane Heraty and congratulations to St Joseph’s who retained their title.

U16 Division 1 Football League

Lilliput Gaels 1-09  Moate All Whites 0-06

On Sunday morning last we travelled to Moate to play the home side in our second division one league game. Following a close first half, we went in with a lead of 1-05 to 0-03 at half time. Following a very tight second half, we emerged with the win. Well done to the team and mentors. The win leaves us with a 100% record after two games. Our next game is this weekend at home against St. Lomans and it promises to be another big test for our team. Team: Peter Dalton, Cathal Kelly, Ryan Boyne, Sean Kincaid, Luke Seery, Tiernan McMahon, Shane Doran, Cody Finnane, Peter Reynolds, Cathal Elliffe, Warric Kirby, Odhran Gavigan, Peter Murphy, Killian Bolger, Shane Corcoran. Subs used: David Maloney, Max Ripley, Conor O'Malley, Jack Gannon, Niall Claffey.

Townland League Finals

The dust had barely settled from the excitement and celebrations following our Scór success, when many of us were up and in action again to prepare and participate in our 9th annual townland league. We had a huge turnout of younger footballers on the day with a full side game between Michael Cusacks and Maurice Davins providing massive excitement throughout. The game, for the second year running, ended all square on 4-09 apiece following a superb second half comeback by Michael Cusacks. Unbelieveably, the sides were still tied following a penalty shoot-out and free kicks were called upon to settle the matter. Following another nail-biting shootout, Maurice Davins held out to win for the third year running. After the final, both sides were presented with their medals and Ryan Corcoran, who captained Maurice Davins, accepted the trophy from Peter Robinson. Well done to all the young players on what was another great final. Maurice Davins: Jemma Seery,

Emma O’Brien, Sara Delaney, Lilia O’Brien, Rose Macken, Dennis Rigney, Ryan Corcoran(Captain), Aaron Kenny, Conor King, Luke Robinson, Shane Carroll, Luke Sinnamon, Anne Reynolds, Sinead O’Brien. Micheal Cusacks: Shane King, Ellen Daly, Emer Claffey, Amy Seery, Sean Macken (Captain), Gavin Ennis, Mason Slevin, John Reynolds, Thomas Reynolds, Therese Daly, Deirdre O’Brien, Emma King, Lochlann O’Brien, Adam Robinson, Tadhg Seery. Following the excitement and passion of the junior game, the senior final was a more sedate affair with a mix of old and young on show for both sides. With many players unavailable for different and varied reasons, amalgamation was the order of the day with teams lining out as follows: Cloneyheigue/Knockeycosker/Ballykilroe/Balrath/Kileenlahan - Paul Seery, Ian Seery, Darren Rigney, Cody Finnane, Niall Claffey, Peter Reynolds, Kieran Deegan. Cloonagh/Toarlisnamore/Ballybrennan/Liskelly/Tiernacreve - Mark King, Shane Heraty, Robert Gannon, Jack Gannon, Enda Claffey, Declan Claffey, Cathal Kelly. The game itself was played in a good spirit although referee, David Slevin, did have to caution players on a number of occasions for some wayward, late and unusual tackles! The introduction of a number of fresh subs for both sides livened up affairs in the second half and in the end, Cloonagh/Toarlisnamore/Ballybrennan/Liskelly/Tiernacreve had eeked out a narrow win.

Planning Ahead

Although it's still in the early stages of 2019, Ballinagore GAA is already planning ahead for 2020 when the club will celebrate its centenary. The club is preparing to embark on exciting developments at our grounds to coincide with the celebration of 100 years of gaelic football being played in and around our village. A lot of work and planning has already taken place and we intend to hold an information night with an official launch of our plans over the next number of weeks. We hope that our club membership, past and present, and our community will rally behind us, get involved and support us. Details will be included in our club notes and on Facebook so keep an eye out and get talking!
