Michael Ryan was making no excuses after Westmeath succumbed to Carlow in the first-ever Joe McDonagh Cup final.

It was a case of deja vu for the Lake County at Croke Park yesterday after they also lost the Allianz League Division 2A final to the Barrowsiders earlier this year. They will now play host to Wexford in the All-Ireland SHC preliminary round quarter-final next weekend.

"Overall, from start to finish, we were never really at the pitch of it," the Westmeath manager admitted.

"We missed a few chances early on and it seemed to drain a ibt of the confidence. But let's be straight, the best team won.

"I think we've played 12 matches, we've won nine and we've lost three, but unfortunately the three games we lost were huge. We just have to try and lift it now for next weekend."
