Waterford look to be without Austin Gleeson for next weekend’s Allianz Hurling League final after the Mount Sion man was sent off in today’s comfortable semi-final victory over Wexford at Nowlan Park.

Gleeson struck two goals in the Deise men’s 5-20 to 0-16 victory before being red carded in the game’s latter stages and now looks set to miss the Division 1 decider against Cork at Semple Stadium next Saturday.

Speaking to media afterwards, Waterford boss Liam Cahill confirmed that they will appeal Gleeson’s red card if there are “any grounds”.

The game itself saw the Munster side in total control as Gleeson struck two goals in the opening 17 minutes and Dessie Hutchinson raised another green flag as they led by 3-9 to 0-10 at half-time.

The Model men needed to come up with a response in the second-half but it was Waterford that raced out of the traps to hit 1-4 without response.

This time, Jack Prendergast found the Wexford net and Shane Bennett would provide the fifth goal prior to Glesson’s dismissal.

The only real positive Darragh Egan’s men could take was seeing their talisman Lee Chin coming off the bench for his first appearance in the league campaign.
